Stinky Diaper Pail? Make Your Own Deodorant Disks for the Diaper Pail

Most diaper pails have a place for a deodorant disk in the lid. You can make those disks yourself either by soaking heavy paper (preferably with rag content) in oil or by using a caked baking soda base. The baking soda disks will become very crumbly, at which point you can add them to the wash and put a new disk in the pail lid.

For baking soda disks, you will need:
  • distilled or boiled water
  •  2 cups of baking soda
  • your choice of essential oils
  • a muffin pan
  • paper muffin cups

Add a few drops of essential oil to a small amount of water. Mix the water with the baking soda. Mix well. Gradually add and mix more water until you have a thick paste.
Press about ½" of paste into each muffin paper and let dry 24 hours. Tear the paper off. After you've used each disk for a month or so (however long you find it effective), crumble the disk into the diaper wash. Baking soda deodorizes and softens the diapers.
This recipe made me a year supply. Happy Diapering! :)

  7. These look great, but how do you store them to maintain their freshness for all that time?

  8. We don't have an actual "Diaper Pail" We just have a stainless steel trash can. Do you know how I could buy something to add the disc? Or do you have any other suggestions! Looking forward to making these!

    1. I would suggest Velcro on the bottom of the paper disc until it's ineffective then use it to wash your clothes or just throw away...But I am sure that they will stick any where this way.>~<

    2. I'm going to make smaller cubes of this and just let each one go in the wash. like the size of a sugar cube. If you're concerned about the essential oils in the wash, rockin green sells a product called "shake it up" that is essentially the exact same thing as this, but they keep it in powder form. they say in the product label to add as much as needed to the wash.

    1. Home Depot has a product that has worked magic at my house. It's made of volcanic rock - yes you heard me right. I put about a 1/4 c in the lid and - voila! stink gone! It come in a bag.

  14. I was given some sachets of sent to hang in the closet for Chris Kringle, I imagine they just have the baking soda and E Oils dressed up in a pretty packet< As I planned to make some small gifts myself I thought I could use this idea to make up some either (or both ways) in small fabric bags to hang

  15. These sound wonderful! I have never used anything like this. So if you use them for a cat box where do you put it?

  16. This is a really fun idea, thank you for sharing! I use the Rockin' Green Soap Stinky Gear spray when things get extra funky in my house. It was designed to clean workout gear or shoes or anything you can't just toss in the washer. I love spraying it because the tea tree oil smells amazing plus actually takes care of whatever is causing the funky smell instead of covering it up.

  17. Please be extra careful when using Essential oils anywhere near cats. They lack the ability to properly metabolize essential oils and even a little bit can be toxic. Just be sure that this won't accidentally be absorbed or ingested by your feline friends.

  18. It is often easy to overlook many areas in the bathroom as they (e. base of stool) may not look dirty. However, since bacteria, which grow in warm, moist and dark places, cause order, they must be cleaned as well.

  19. Would these work without essential oils to just neutralize the diaper smell? We're all very sensitive to scents, so we don't use EOs. Thanks!

  20. Could I make these and what disks I don't use right away I can store in a Ziploc bag? We have a smaller apartment and probably wouldn't need many of them. I am really excited about making these. I have been trying to find ways to make our apartment always smell good and fresh.
